Research

The Centre’s research program enhances and informs Australia’s understanding of security and defence strategy. Our in-house experts achieve this through integrated research and learning programs.

Our research areas

Through interdisciplinary collaboration with institutional partners in Australia and around the world, we produce high-impact insights that sharpen Australia’s intellectual edge and secure our common future.

National and defence strategy

We examine the theory and effective practice of strategy and leadership. By finetuning the requirements of a ‘good’ strategy, our national and defence strategy research aims to meet the demands of today’s changing geopolitical landscape and ensure the effective use of national power.

Global and regional security

Through an interdisciplinary approach, we research critical topics – from Chinese foreign policy and cyber conflict to peacekeeping and human rights in Asia. Our global and regional security research goal is to better prepare Australia for a rapidly changing strategic environment.

The character of war and military history

We explore how warfare has evolved across technological, organisational, human and ethical dimensions. Drawing on military history as well as current and future operations, the character of war and military history research also sheds light on pathways to peace.

Professional military education and wargaming

By developing innovative assessments, simulations and wargames, we focus on how professional military education can sharpen Australia’s intellectual edge and enhance its preparedness for emerging security threats.
