Science these days is so much more than lab coats and Bunsen burners.

Today's science student is an explorer, an adventurer, someone who not only experiences the wonder of the natural world – but also understands what it’s all about.

When you look closer at what a science degree really involves, you’ll see that there are lots of unexpected perks.

Deakin offers some of the best opportunities that the study of science can offer, from unlocking the mysteries of forensic science to trekking through the rainforests of Borneo.

Best of all, you can take your skills out into the wider world.

Not convinced? Here are four awesome reasons to study science at Deakin University.

Reason #1 - Experience new environments

Tired of spending all day in a classroom? Want to spend more time outdoors?

As a student of environmental science, you will be doing a lot of hands-on fieldwork studying fascinating and complex environments.

Take marine biology. One moment you could be at a remote coastal location collecting samples, the next you’re analysing them in the lab.

You might find yourself snorkelling among rare and unique marine life, or on board Yolla, our Deakin research vessel, studying deep sea biodiversity.

It’s a course that will take you from the lab to the sea and back again.

You’ll get your hands dirty (and your feet wet) and become intimately acquainted with Australia’s marine environments.

And it’s not just marine biology students who get to venture outside university grounds.

Borneo’s teeming lowland rainforests await those who enrol in Deakin’s Asian Conservation and Environment Sustainability: International Study Tour.

Students will not only gain firsthand experience of Borneo’s finely tuned, incredibly diverse ecosystem, but also insight into how these environments are threatened by climate change and deforestation.

Studying environmental science at Deakin can take you from the classroom to some of the richest, most unique environments in the world.

Reason #2 - Acquaint yourself with the animal kingdom

Few university courses would ask you to catch a bandicoot or trap a rat.

But that’s just one of the many unique learning opportunities offered by Deakin’s Bachelor of Environmental Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology). It is a course that appeals to animal lovers interested in conservation.

With Australia’s diverse natural environments as their setting, students learn how to handle native mammals and develop the skills needed to protect their environments.

It is a path to protecting Australia’s natural heritage, and will develop skills and knowledge that can be applied all over the world.

Reason #3 - Discover the building blocks of the human body

Who wouldn’t feel at least a little bit of a rush discovering the secrets of human biology?

As a student of biomedical science, you will have the opportunity to master a science dedicated to serving human health and wellbeing.

It is a fun, fascinating and constantly evolving field. It is a diverse course offering majors in pharmaceutical science, molecular life science, medical biotechnology, environmental health, and infection and immunity.

Students who pursue study in this area have the chance to learn how antibiotics can target cell walls, predict the chemical properties of organic molecules, discover the role proteins play in cell dysfunction, and learn the principles of linking and isolating human disease genes.

Reason #4 - Solve crimes

Crime scenes are puzzles. They are environments that are as rich with information as a forest floor. But revealing their secrets requires the careful methods of a forensic scientist.

At Deakin, classrooms can be transformed into crime scenes. By studying forensic science, students will be thrown into the complex world of crime analysis.

It is a course where the objective foundations of the scientific method meet the messy realm of human nature.

As part of the course, you will collect DNA, test drug samples, learn how to analyse fibres and read a crime scene. How many glasses are on the table? What is the date on the newspaper? When is the likely time of death?

As a forensic science student at Deakin, you do much more than just study – you learn to solve crimes.

Deakin offers skills for life

Science is, almost by definition, a constant, never ending project; an exciting adventure.

It can start careers as a conservationist, marine biologist, in land and wildlife management, in medicine and even in criminology.

Studying with Deakin’s School of Life and Environmental Sciences is diverse and flexible, and offers almost countless opportunities.

Just as importantly, you will never be bored. It offers something for everyone.
