Deakin InnoFes: Celebrating purpose-driven tech innovation
Deakin news
On Thursday 29 September, over 80 School of Information Technology student representatives from the capstone program gathered at Deakin InnoFes to showcase 18 innovative products to the industry.
The students pitched their products to over 50 industry guests from companies including Microsoft, Google, Fitbit, Infosys Limited, Telstra and intelia. To gamify the whole experience, guests were invited to role-play as an 'Angel Investor' for the day, and 'invest' Deakin Tokens in their favourite products and talents. The product with the most tokens won Best Student Product of the Year.
A big congratulations to the winners from Redback Operations and their Smart-Bike Product, which incorporates fitness and technology into a product that is truly creative, purpose-driven and inclusive. The Smart Bike Product integrated virtual reality, IoT and AI to create an entirely immersive and futuristic exercise experience.
Well done to the two runner-up products coming in equal second place: Melbourne Open Data Playground from Chameleon and Dream Big from Thoth Tech. Melbourne Open Data Playground from Chameleon developed an interactive website that serves to educate the public on how to effectively leverage government open data sets to support the development of Smart Cities. Dream Big from Thoth Tech developed an application targeted at university students to help visualise, map and track their academic achievements, life experience and employment readiness.
At a later session, guests from Microsoft, Infosys and intelia were invited on stage for a keynote and a panel discussion to share insights on graduate career development while exploring the attributes and capabilities employers are looking for in the industry today.
