Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO has congratulated the Hon. Dan Tehan MP and the Hon. Sarah Henderson MP on their new Federal Ministerial positions.

Minister Tehan is the new Federal Minister for Education while Ms Henderson takes on the role of Assistant Minister for Social Services, Housing and Disability Services.

Professor den Hollander said Minister Tehan and Ms Henderson, to be sworn in Tuesday, were well-known and good friends to the Deakin community.

"Minister Tehan noted in his maiden Parliamentary speech in 2010 that 'education is a key reason I am standing here today'," Professor den Hollander said.

"Deakin's Warrnambool campus is in Minister Tehan's electorate of Wannon and he has been a strong supporter of our commitment to delivering higher education in the South West region.

"When Deakin refocused its education model at the Warrnambool campus in 2016, Minister Tehan's efforts to facilitate the support of the Federal Government were crucial.

"Ms Henderson, the Member for Corangamite, was at our Waurn Ponds campus earlier this month to jointly announce a new $3 million Kids Play Foundation Centre for Therapy, Research and Training, which is to be built right beside Deakin's School of Medicine and will change the lives of children with disabilities. Her knowledge and passion in this area is obvious.

"On behalf of the Deakin community I congratulate Minister Tehan and Ms Henderson on their appointments and wish them both the very best.

"I also thank Senator the Hon. Simon Birmingham for his contribution to the Education and Training portfolio and for his support for Deakin and the higher education sector more generally."
