Deakin University welcomes the release of the Victorian Government's draft structure plans for the new Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East stations and their surrounding neighbourhoods and communities.
Deakin has been in extensive discussion with the SRL since planning began and we look forward to working through the details of the proposal as part of this next phase of community consultation.
'This is an important step in bringing the benefits of this city shaping project to our students, staff and the broader Deakin community,' said Professor Iain Martin, Vice-Chancellor of Deakin University.
'The SRL will provide an integral connection to high quality tertiary education for students living across Melbourne long into the future, with the project delivering a direct train service to our Burwood Campus - our busiest campus - for the very first time.
'The increasing number of Deakin Residential students living on Burwood campus will also be able to better connect to opportunities in the broader Melbourne metropolitan area and have a more vibrant campus environment.
'This direct connection will allow for better research collaboration, support increased on-campus attendance and provide more sustainable transportation options.
'We know Burwood is already undergoing significant changes and this will only continue as the SRL transforms how people can live in and move around the local Burwood area,' Professor Martin said.
The draft plan also provides much needed detail about how the development of the Burwood precinct as a hub of innovation, education, employment and housing will shape a more vibrant community for staff and students.
The significant growth in medium density housing will provide much-needed relief for students and staff looking for convenient, affordable and accessible accommodation in the local Burwood area.
Students will have greater access to employment opportunities, with the proposed growth of retail and business along Burwood Highway and Highbury Road.
The development of centrally located amenities will enhance shopping and food, recreation, entertainment and health and wellbeing services to create a richer experience for students, staff and other residents.
Mixed-use precincts will also build connected and active neighbourhoods with the addition of more open, green spaces and pedestrian and bike paths.
In line with our focus on innovation and sustainability, Deakin's students and researchers will be able to benefit from employment and partnership opportunities.
The establishment of knowledge-based businesses in the precinct will attract and retain talented and skilled workers to the revitalised Burwood community.
We are committed to realising the best future for our communities and will continue to work closely with the Victorian Government to ensure that the Suburban Rail Loop delivers the maximal benefit for our students, staff and the broader community.
