Hi Everybody. And welcome to the Deakin Abroad Information Session.

Thank you for joining us today.

I hope you're here to learn about all of the exciting opportunities that Deakin abroad can offer you to study globally.

So why would you want to go on one of Deakin abroad fantastic programmes.

Firstly, it might be to immerse yourself in a different culture, pick up a different language and see the world from a different perspective.

You might want to jump into a global classroom, something outside of Burwood or Waurn Ponds in Geelong.

And finally, and probably the most important, you're going to make lifelong friends, friends that will live around the world, people you can touch base with and international contacts for the rest of your life.

So what were we covered today? Firstly, we'll touch on whereabouts you can go.

Then we'll mention our short term overseas study programmes, which include our short term partner programs,

Our GEL programs and our faculty led study programs will then reach out and touch on our trimester abroad.

What? What eligibility? There is any restrictions.

And then finally, and probably one that jumps off the page, we will talk about the funding opportunities.

So where can you go? Well, with Deakin we've got partners almost anywhere around the globe.

You could go from South Africa through to Argentina.

We could be in Asia. We've got North America and, of course, all the way across Europe.

Depending on your course, you might be able to undertake a trimester abroad, possibly a year.

However, some courses are restrictive and you may only be able to undertake a short term program or a faculty led internship.

The first step in any of these programmes is to speak with a student advisor and get a course map so you can understand what best suits your degree.

Let's first start with our short term programs. So this is a fantastic way to study overseas while earning Deakin credit toward your degree.

Our programs are going to run between 2 to 6 weeks in duration, and you'll find them on offer either during the inter-trimester, break in June and July, or over the trimester 3 period which runs between November and February.

There is a non-refundable application fee of $55 when you apply.

When applying for a short term partner programs,you must have a minimum of 60 WAM and have completed eight credit points at the time of application. For international students it's important to note that you must ensure that you're abiding by the conditions of your student visa.

Here is a quick overview of a brochure sample. So this is for Yonsei University underneath the Yonsei University banner.

You'll see a number of tabs that will give you all the information you need for this program.

As you can see, we do like to highlight when we have additional funding available for this.

So this particular program has a $3,000 New Colombo Plan grant attached to it.

More about that later. Under the overview, let's have a look at some of the things that we list here, such as the dates of the program will point out any sort of deadlines for the application, any restrictions that are included.

It's also important to note down below we like to list the fields of study.

Next, we go to the Global Experiential learning units, which we call GEL programs.

So these GEL programs provide you with a hands on learning experience to help you get ahead in a highly competitive job market.

Our programs again run for 2 to 6 weeks. These include internships or social impact programs around the world.

These programs also run during the June July inter-trimester break or over trimester three in that November to February period.

We do have requirements for these, which is a minimum of a 60 WAM and eight completed credit points at time of application.

If you are undertaking a GEL internship, it is important to note that a updated CV is required and there will also be assignments that are involved with that unit. For international students,

Once again, please ensure that you are abiding by the conditions of your student visa.

Here is a sample of the GEL program brochure.

So very similar to what we saw for short term programs. We do have tabs with all the information regarding the program.

In this overview section, we just go over all of the pertinent information for the program, including the dates, any restrictions that are included, and the funding opportunities.

Our Faculty Led study programs are intensive 2 to 3 week programs, and they're usually led by Deakin academics or staff.

They can be funded through the same funding options that we'll talk about in a minute and also have the requirements of a 60 WAM and eight credit points completed at the time of application.

Each faculty has a work integrated learning team who manage these programs, and we work closely with them to get you enrolled.

So now on to the longer of our study abroad programs.

And this would be trimester exchange.

Currently, Deakin has over 150 partnerships around the world, meaning you can pretty much travel to any area of the world for an exchange.

You have the option of one or two trimesters depending on your course structure, and you do need to have an approved overseas study plan in order to progress your application.

This basically means that any subject you study overseas you will get credit for when you return to take home.

The key points of this program is you do remain enrolled is a Deakin student, meaning you are eligible for all of the benefits of being a Deakin student, which includes Centrelink as well as the Deakin insurance policy, which we will speak about later.

There's no upfront tuition costs for your host university and everything you do study overseas will be in English, whether you study in Japan or you study in England.

Everything's taught in English, and whether you choose to do a language on the side is entirely up to you.

So just quickly, we're going to touch on the eligibility for exchange and there's a few things we need to work our way through.

Firstly, for an undergraduate student, you need to have completed at least eight credit points towards your degree.

This can include 4 credits for prior learning, but you do need to have completed eight credits before you depart for.

The postgraduate students you need to have completed 4 Deakin credit points prior to your departure, and these need to have been completed at Deakin, not including credit for prior learning.

You do need to take up a full time study load while overseas.

This will vary from country to country. A full time study load at Deakin does consist of three Deakin credit points.

However, some countries like the United States, you will need to undertake 4 credit points in order to meet their visa requirements.

And finally, we do require you to have a weighted average mark of 60.

However, we do apply some discretion from program to program.

And lastly, there again, like all of Deakin's programs, international students do need to be abiding by your student visa.

And lastly, for trimester exchange, we do need to run through some of the restrictions on the program, working by faculties.

In terms of the business and law faculty, we do advise that you don't study accounting and financial planning majors overseas.

And when it comes to law subjects, you can only study your law electives overseas and not in North America.

In arts, early childhood development and teaching will find it very difficult to undertake an exchange due to the accreditation associated with those degrees.

In terms of health and nursing students, you do have a couple of options available to you.

But again, due to your accreditation, your options are limited.

With Masters of Dietetics as well as the degrees listed, they're also having significant limitations on their degrees.

Psychology students. You can go overseas and study any of your units however, we do request that you speak to us prior to your application.

So here you can see a program brochure for the San Diego State University in the United States, just like all the programs, we do have the tabs across the top, along with the little bit of a blog about the university.

And if there are any recommendations or restricted programs, you will see these down the bottom of the brochure.

It's important you do pay attention to the restricted units at the bottom just in case you are looking to study any of those subjects while abroad.

The next slide will look at is the exchange overview. The key thing to take out of this page is the exchange category colour.

This will determine whether you need a backup application when you apply.

So now we'll quickly go over the grants and the funding available for the Deakin abroad programs.

First we have the OS help Loan students are able to take out two of these loans over the course of their degree.

You will be able to find more information for this under the funding tab on the Deakin Abroad webpage.

Next, we have the New Colombo Plan, which is a mobility grant, and it's targeted for Indo-Pacific regions only.

This is program specific, and these grants can range between 1 to $3000 for short term programs or internships and could be between 1 to 7000 for trimester exchange experiences for.

Finally, if you are currently eligible for Centrelink, you can continue to receive these funds while studying abroad with Deakin.

I'm sure some of you are thinking. Well, so many options.

How do they all differ? Well, as you can see from the table in front of you, there's plenty of small differences between our programs.

Use the table to find which program might best suit your degree and your circumstances.

As we draw to the end of this presentation, it's important that we speak about some of the benefits of undertaking a Deakin program.

We do run a pre-departure session for all students undertaking a Deakin program.

In this pre-departure session we speak about the student agreement that all students have signed, basically saying that they agree to stick to Deakin's rules while they are overseas.

You'll be excited to know that while you are on overseas on a Deakin program, you are covered by Deakin's comprehensive travel insurance policy.

Deakin also provides all its students with international S.O.S. Access.

This is a one stop shop for all your needs while you are abroad.

And finally, at the pre-departure session, we do cover what responsibilities each student has while on the program.
