You are invited to participate in the use of a staff bus which is being introduced on a trial basis. There is, rightly, considerable concern amongst members of staff regarding Deakin's environmental responsibilities and the aim of the trial is to see if we can cut down the number of vehicles that travel between our Campuses with only one or two occupants. A number of suggestions regarding the introduction of a bus service have been made via the "Why don’t they …?" suggestion box http://www.deakin.edu.au/vc/staff-only/suggestion
Commencing on Monday 21 July, a staff bus will be introduced on a trial basis. During the initial three month trial, the bus service will be offered as a travel option for staff based at either of the Geelong Campuses who need to spend the day at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood. I am sure that there will be members of staff who would prefer that the bus travelled the other way and Warrnambool staff may feel left out, but this is only a trial - if the bus proves to be popular, it may be possible to extend the service. The success of the trial depends on your use of the service.
The service will operate every day from Monday to Friday on a needs only basis with pre-booking of seats essential so as to ensure that the service capacity is adequate. There will be no fee for the use of the service during the trial - we hope that this will encourage use of the bus service; it will certainly be cheaper to take the bus than to use a fleet vehicle and, for those of you who would otherwise have to drive, the possibility of reading on the bus may be attractive.
Information collected during the trial will be used as a basis for considering the ongoing viability of the service, refinement of the service specification and the demand for expanding the service so as to enhance the travel options for staff based at other Campuses.
